Xtreme Tacos

5609 N. Nebraska

As the picture shows, Xtreme Tacos is in a cool looking space in Seminole Heights–that made us a little excited. But unfortunately, there were some problems that belied the cool space.

The Food

We got the taco pastor and the chimichanga. The taco pastor was quite good and definitely the best dish we got. I also ordered a chicken taco “Xtreme style.” The xtreme fixings were good but the chicken was rather dry and not very flavorful. These dishes came with refried beans that were kind emulsified into a gummy paste, and they weren’t very good.

The chimichanga we ordered was huge, but the quality did not measure up to the size. It wasn’t crispy which made the shell rather gummy. The filling was OK but not great, and certainly not good enough to counter the soggy shell.

The street corn (one of our standard control dishes) was not as good as most of the other ones we have had. It had some of the qualities of good street corn, but not enough to make it stand out.

The Sauces

The sauces, likewise, weren’t very good. They were thin and really devoid of any reak flavor beyond the hot/medium or mild. These were either store-bought (probably) or food processed to death. Either way, they didn’t help the complement the food that much.

The Experience

I mentioned in the opening, there were some problems with the place, and this one kind of obscured some of the good qualities. The place smelled bad inside.  My partner said it smalled like “bathroom” and I’m not sure if I completely agree with her, but it definitely smelled bad. The smell of the food did help mitigate this, but that was only until we ate it.

Verdict

Xtreme Tacos does have a bit of a reputation in Seminole heights, indeed it was recommended to us. But between the smell of the place and the food that was rather devoid of substance and flavor, we couldn’t validate the reputation.
